Soft, sandy beaches and emerald green waters characterize the small, upscale town of Indian Beach. The town of Indian Beach is covered by lush maritime forests, surrounding the area divided by Salter Path, with Indian Beach to the east and west. This stretch of less than two square miles (5.2 square kilometers) was named as such after the discovery of Indian burial mounds, before the town’s incorporation in 1973.
Indian Beach is a tourist’s delight during the summer season and visitors flock to the area. The turtle conservation program of Indian Beach is managed by volunteers who work in conjunction with the Bogue Banks Sea Turtle Project and the North Carolina Aquarium. The forest covers the residential areas and makes the area astonishingly beautiful.
Accommodations include motels, resort condominiums, and campgrounds on the beach, shaded by flourishing forest. The public beach offers showers and bathrooms, along with picnic tables. The wooden walkway out to the beach runs over white sand dunes onto a soft, sandy beach and pristine water.

1. Bogue Inlet Fishing Pier in nearby Emerald Isle
This beautiful pier is the hub of activity in Emerald Isle. On one side you can see several people out surfing while on the pier you can see a bunch of people fishing. It’s free to walk out on the pier but 12.50 USD to fish. The second level observation deck, towards the end of the pier, provides beautiful views of the sunset. It is also a great place to sit and watch the sun come up, spend the day fishing, and just enjoy the breeze. The photo opportunities from the observation deck and the pier are wonderful.
Lots of people come here, even at night, for fishing and photography. It’s a wonderfully quiet place with great staff. The pier is also a place to relax and enjoy the views and sounds of the sea. If you’re in the area it’s a nice spot to visit.

3. North Carolina Aquarium in nearby Pine Knoll Shores

The large U-shaped aquarium is a great place to learn about marine life in North Carolina, both sea and inland. With a wonderful layout, clean, and beautiful displays of sharks, a wonderful otter exhibit, and great jellyfish display, the aquarium presents an excellent picture of different regions of North Carolina. There is also a touch tank, with friendly rays and little sharks, as well as horseshoe crabs. Staff demonstration inside the large tank is equally educational and fun for all people.
There is a back area, with docks that let you walk out towards the marshland and view the crabs and birds, with a .5 mile (.8 kilometer) walking trail and snake exhibit. There is also a small playground for kids and adults. The nature trail out back is great and there is lots to do, enjoy, and learn. It’s a great place for families, couples, or solo travelers.

4. Island Water Sports
Island Water Sports is a great way to explore the Crystal Coast with their endless water adventures, from jet ski rentals to kayaks and more. The kayaks are delivered to your beach home, free of charge. The banana boat ride promises to be an experience worth remembering.
A paddle board on the calm waters of Bogue Sound for laid back people and a FlyBoard, or a jet powered board for the thrill seekers, is there to satisfy all your adrenaline needs. They also offer beach equipment and surfboard rentals.

5. Fort Macon State Park in nearby Atlantic Beach

This historical site, with great views of the ocean, offers plenty to see and best of all, it’s free. Each little room below the fort shows how life was in the 19th century. It’s a nicely preserved fort with lots of artifacts, a live shooting demo, cannons and ammo supply storage, replica barracks, soldiers living quarters/bunks, mess hall and information on the working soldiers and how the fort worked.
The volunteers who work here are friendly and they have a wealth of knowledge about all the happenings at the fort and surrounding area. Well preserved, the fort is fun to explore and learn some history.

6. Carowinds Rollercoaster Theme Park
If you love coasters, Carowinds Rollercoaster Theme Park is a great park - they have major roller coasters and all the rides are very fun. “The Intimidator” is over 200 feet (61 meters) high, “Fury 325”, close to the north entrance, hits 95 mph (153 kph) and is the most amazing coaster you will ever ride. They also have a water park, with a lazy river and big water slides.
If you go more than once your season pass pays for itself and the gold pass has many perks, including parking. With numerous eating establishments and people watching, a day at Carowinds is fun. It’s a great amusement park, with almost 400 acres (161.9 hectares) of fun, for the whole family.

7. Carolina Kitesurfing in Emerald Isle
Kitesurfing is a fantastic way to see more of Emerald Isle and get in a good amount of exercise while doing so. This is a father and son business and they run it very efficiently. Rick and Ricky are very personable and have a genuine interest in who you are and where you are visiting from, etc. Their 2.5 mile (4 kilometer) paddle boarding tour is a great experience, even if you’ve never been on a paddleboard before and they make sure you feel comfortable and safe.

8. Bluff Fort Historic Site in Carteret County
This is a recreation of an original 19th-century Mormon town site and it contains an old Mormon fort, made of individual cabins in a hollow, square pattern which tells the tales of the families who settled in Bluff, as pioneers. The cabins contain the original contents of their homes, donated by their descendants. The stories of hardship and endurance are interesting to read. There is no charge to view, but they do ask for donations. The folks in the store/museum are friendly and helpful and there is a lovely gift shop, museum and visitor center, too.
